Social Justice
Unitarian Universalism has a long history of working towards social justice on many fronts. Inherent in the UU faith is the idea that our personal beliefs and ethics should be shared with the world by helping others.
First UU Church of Indiana, PA (with our motto, “Inspire. Care. Act.”) participates in many local efforts to help those among us who are most in need.
We host a popular monthly event called the Plant-Based Potluck and hope you’ll join us! This event is FREE and open to the public. We offer a new theme each time; follow us on Facebook for the latest information.
We have taken part in local marches to advocate for causes such as immigration justice, fair legislative reform, and women’s rights. Our congregation is active in local good works including preventing child abuse; combating racism; walking to raise funds and awareness about hunger issues; collecting donations and nonperishable items for food banks; providing warm clothing to women and children staying in a local shelter; and more.
We “give away the plate” each month, donating one Sunday’s collection basket to a chosen local charity. (For the list of some of our Give Away the Plate recipients, please click HERE.)
We are also a member congregation of UUJusticePA, a group of Unitarian Universalists in Pennsylvania who are working together in common cause to embrace, articulate, and advocate for all goals of social and environmental justice. UUJusticePA encourages supporters to pursue justice by voting, advocating, and making just public policies. To learn more, please visit the UUJusticePA website.
