Since April 26, 2006 The First Unitarian Universalist Church has been recognized by the Unitarian Universalist Association as a Welcoming Congregation after successfully completing a program including:
- Measurable achievements in the areas of education, congregational life, and community outreach, using the Welcoming Congregation a guide.
- The church took a congregational vote in affirmation of being recognized by the Unitarian Universalist Association as a Welcoming Congregation.
History of the Welcoming Congregation Program
The Unitarian Universalist Association has been on record since 1970 as supporting the rights and worth of lesbian, gay, and bisexual persons. It was decided to develop a complete program so each church and congregation members would be able to incorporate the “best practices” to create a place of safety, dignity, and dialogue. All of their civil rights would be honored to begin the foundation so all civil rights afforded others could be a social consciousness among all Unitarian Universalists internationally.
