FOOD FOR BODY AND SPIRIT

From the Social Justice committee: Our projects and goals for 2014

Nothing is more important than feeding and sheltering everyone in our community. More than 12,000 people in Indiana County are “food insecure,” which is a fancy way of saying that they don’t know where the next meal is coming from. We believe that our church can and should be working to relieve local poverty and hunger wherever we can.

We have a lively and active committee working on issues related to poverty and food issues and we are working closely with ICCAP, our church committees, other groups, and the youth of our RE program to bring these issues into focus. We are excited that the RE children voted to sponsor Power Pack, the program that provides weekend food for elementary school children in need. (This program of ICCAP serves 400 children now. As many as 400 more children haven’t been reached because of lack of funding.) The First UU children collected both food and money to support Power Pack this spring. We plan to keep that effort going.

We will also be engaged with other community organizations and initiatives to foster social and environmental justice. More and more, those two threads overlap.

There is much to learn and much to share. Watch this page for updates and community resources!
