SOCIAL PROJECT
Supporting a free library system in the Greater Indiana Area:
Indiana Free Library

The Indiana Free Library located in downtown Indiana will need to find a new home or close due to budgetary cuts.  The educational institution will be a loss to young and old alike, but especially those with limited income who are able to access its materials, resources, and computers at no cost.

We can no longer take for granted that a public library will always exist in our community without our active participation as individuals and as our united group, our congregation.  The role of libraries has expanded, not imploded as many may have us believe.  In a county which has a large number of rural locations and above average underemployment and poverty levels of adults and children, typical learning outlets which can be found by computer and internet are not available free unless in a library or in a public school.

The Social Justice Project links to the current identity, values or seven principles of Unitarian Universalism, especially by focusing on the:

  • The inherent worth and dignity of every person
  • Justice, equity and compassion in human relations
  • The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in the society at large

Our congregation has the resources and people to make a real difference!  This can be done by collaborating with the executive committee of the Indiana Free Library.  The goal of the First UU will be to have 100% participation in this social justice project by volunteering, participating, financially supporting, or using creative talents to bring about the outcome of giving to this essential resource for sustainability to serve Indiana.

Many of our congregation members have been long-standing active members to the Indiana Free Library, and they would be asked to assist this project manager in all the “action plans” so as to bring success seamlessly.  The project manager will receive direction from the IFL Executive Committee members to create an outside team which the First Unitarian Universalist Church members can be “grouped or teamed” so as to accomplish each action plan by utilizing talents without waste or duplication of services.

Each congregation member and friend would have an opportunity to choose one or more activities to support the operation, services, or fundraising during the upcoming 2012 year.  By having these opportunities highlighted in a timely fashion in advance of each event, members and friends can plan which would work into their personal calendars.  To allow for the modeling of this volunteerism for the children of the FUU, members are encouraged to have children volunteer with them as many times as possible.
